Magnetic Island Qld 4819
Magnetic Island consists of 40 km of coastline. This beautiful tropical island of 5 184 ha is only 8 km n-e of Townsville with Mount Cook (497 m) being its highest point. Its four small settlements (Horseshoe Bay, Arcadia, Nelly Bay and Picnic Bay) are all located on the eastern side, whilst some 2 500 ha of the west and centre are made up of national park. The island still enjoys a peaceful untouched feel but more tourism development is planned. Main activities include 25 kms of walking trails with native flora and fauna, numerous water sports and seasonal whale watching.
